Procurement FAQ
What is the difference between the PM883, PM893, PM897, S4520, and S4620?
The key difference is endurance. PM883 (0.8 DWPD) suits read-heavy workloads like boot drives and log archiving. PM893 (1.3 DWPD) balances mixed read/write for general enterprise storage. PM897 (3 DWPD) handles write-intensive tasks like databases and transaction logs. Solidigm S4520 (up to 3 DWPD) and S4620 (up to 5 DWPD) offer the highest endurance for the most demanding environments. Match your daily write volume to the DWPD rating over the 5-year warranty period.
Why choose a SATA SSD over an NVMe SSD for my server?
SATA SSDs deliver up to 560 MB/s sequential read — sufficient for most enterprise applications like databases, email servers, and content repositories where IOPS consistency matters more than peak throughput. They also cost less per TB and are compatible with virtually all servers that have SATA backplanes, making them ideal for upgrading existing infrastructure without hardware changes.
What form factor do these SSDs use, and will they fit my server?
All models are 2.5-inch, 7mm standard SATA drives. They fit any server tray or hot-swap bay designed for 2.5-inch SATA drives, including Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Lenovo ThinkSystem, and Supermicro platforms. Please confirm your server supports 2.5-inch SATA hot-swap bays before ordering.
Do these SATA SSDs have power loss protection (PLP)?
Yes. All five series include hardware-level power loss protection (PLP). In the event of sudden power failure, the capacitor-backed PLP circuit ensures in-flight data and the NAND mapping table are safely flushed, preventing data corruption — a critical requirement for enterprise 24/7 operation.
What capacities are available?
Available capacities across the SATA SSD lineup: 480GB, 960GB, 1.92TB, 3.84TB, and 7.68TB. Not all capacities are available for every series — PM883 goes up to 1.92TB, while S4620 goes up to 3.84TB. Please specify your series and target capacity when requesting a quote.
What is the sequential read/write speed?
Sequential read reaches up to 560 MB/s (Samsung series) and 550 MB/s (Solidigm series). Sequential write reaches up to 530 MB/s. Random read IOPS reach up to 98K (Samsung) and 92K (Solidigm), with random write up to 60K IOPS on the S4620.
Can these drives be used in RAID configurations?
Yes. All models support standard RAID controllers (RAID 0/1/5/6/10) and are validated for enterprise RAID environments. The hardware PLP ensures RAID rebuild integrity even after unexpected power events. We recommend confirming your RAID controller's SSD compatibility list before finalizing the configuration.
What is the MTBF and warranty?
All models carry a 2,000,000-hour MTBF rating and a 5-year limited warranty. This covers the full duration of typical enterprise deployment cycles.
How do I choose between Samsung and Solidigm SATA SSDs?
Samsung PM-series drives use Samsung's proprietary V-NAND TLC with well-established enterprise track records and broad server platform validation. Solidigm S-series drives use 144L TLC 3D NAND with higher write endurance options (S4620 up to 5 DWPD) at competitive pricing. Both are suitable for enterprise use; your choice may depend on existing vendor preferences, server firmware compatibility requirements, or specific endurance requirements.
What is the typical use case for these SATA SSDs?
Boot drives, virtual machine storage, database read caching, content delivery, and general-purpose enterprise workloads where SATA infrastructure already exists. For latency-critical applications requiring over 1GB/s throughput or 500K+ IOPS, consider upgrading to NVMe.
