Procurement FAQ
What is the difference between NL-SAS and SATA HDD?

NL-SAS (Near-Line SAS) drives use a SAS 12Gb/s interface instead of SATA 6Gb/s. Key advantages include: dual-port connectivity for redundant path failover (critical for enterprise SAN), higher interface bandwidth (12Gb/s vs 6Gb/s), full-duplex data transfer, and compatibility with SAS expanders and RAID controllers. NL-SAS is the preferred choice for mission-critical storage arrays.

What NL-SAS series do you offer?

WD Ultrastar HC (HC320 8TB, HC550 16TB, HC560 20TB, HC580 24TB), Seagate Exos (8TB, 16TB, 20TB, 24TB, SAS 12Gb/s), and Toshiba MG (MG08 8TB, MG10 20TB, MG11 24TB, SAS 12Gb/s). All are 3.5-inch, 7200 RPM.

What is dual-port SAS and why does it matter?

SAS drives have two independent data ports, allowing simultaneous connection to two separate SAS controllers or expanders. If one controller or cable fails, the array automatically switches to the second path with no data loss or downtime. This makes NL-SAS the required interface for enterprise SAN and mission-critical RAID deployments where path redundancy is mandatory.

What capacities are available?

8TB, 16TB, 20TB, and 24TB across all three brands. WD Ultrastar HC580 and Seagate Exos X both reach 24TB. Availability may vary by capacity — contact us for lead time on specific models.

What is the sustained transfer rate?

Transfer rates range from 248 MB/s (Toshiba MG08 8TB) to 298 MB/s (WD Ultrastar HC580 24TB). Seagate Exos SAS models reach up to 285 MB/s. Higher-capacity drives deliver higher sustained throughput.

What RAID controllers are compatible with these drives?

Compatible with enterprise SAS RAID controllers including Broadcom/LSI MegaRAID, HPE Smart Array, Dell PERC, and Adaptec SmartRAID series, as well as SAS expander topologies for high-density JBOD and SAN configurations. Please confirm your controller's supported drive list.

What recording technology do these drives use?

WD Ultrastar HC320 and HC580 use CMR. HC550 and HC560 use EAMR (Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording), an enterprise variant of PMR using microwave assistance for higher areal density while maintaining CMR-level RAID reliability. Seagate Exos and Toshiba MG recording technology varies by model.

What is the MTBF and warranty?

WD Ultrastar HC550/560/580 and Seagate Exos 16TB+: 2,500,000 hours MTBF, 5-year warranty. WD Ultrastar HC320 and Seagate Exos 8TB: 2,000,000 hours MTBF, 5-year warranty. Toshiba MG SAS: 2,500,000 hours MTBF, 5-year warranty.

What is the power consumption?

Active power: approximately 8.1W (Toshiba MG11) to 11.3W (Seagate Exos 8TB). Idle power: 4.3W to 7.4W. For high-density enclosures, calculate total enclosure power draw based on drive count and cooling capacity.

What is the typical use case for NL-SAS HDDs?

Enterprise SAN storage arrays, high-availability RAID groups, data warehousing, backup repositories, and large-scale object storage platforms (Ceph, MinIO). Any environment requiring dual-path redundancy, SAS expander scalability, or integration with enterprise RAID controllers should use NL-SAS over SATA.
