Procurement FAQ
What SATA HDD series do you offer and what are their differences?

We offer three enterprise SATA HDD series: WD Gold (4TB–24TB, CMR, up to 279 MB/s), Seagate Exos (4TB–24TB, up to 285 MB/s, 2,500,000-hour MTBF on higher capacities), and Toshiba MG (4TB–24TB, CMR, up to 295 MB/s on the MG11). All use 3.5-inch form factor, SATA 6Gb/s interface, and 7200 RPM, making them interchangeable in most server bays.

What is CMR recording technology and why does it matter?

CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) writes each track in a fixed, non-overlapping pattern — the most reliable technology for enterprise workloads with random writes, RAID rebuilds, and sustained write operations. All WD Gold and Toshiba MG drives use CMR. We do not supply SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) drives for enterprise use, as SMR has well-documented limitations in RAID and write-intensive environments.

What is the maximum capacity available?

All three series offer up to 24TB per drive: Toshiba MG11 (24TB), Seagate Exos X (24TB+), WD Gold (24TB). For higher density with dual-port redundancy, we recommend NL-SAS HDDs.

What is the sustained transfer rate?

Transfer rates range from 243 MB/s (Toshiba MG08 4TB) to 295 MB/s (Toshiba MG11 24TB). WD Gold reaches up to 279 MB/s; Seagate Exos up to 285 MB/s. Higher-capacity drives generally achieve higher sustained throughput due to increased areal density.

Can these drives be used in RAID arrays?

Yes. All three series are designed and validated for enterprise RAID environments (RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60). CMR recording ensures predictable write behavior essential for RAID rebuild integrity. Cache sizes of 256MB–512MB per drive help sustain RAID performance under mixed workloads.

What is the MTBF and warranty?

WD Gold and Toshiba MG: 2,000,000–2,500,000 hours MTBF, 5-year warranty. Seagate Exos: 2,000,000–2,500,000 hours MTBF depending on capacity, 5-year warranty. All are rated for 24/7 continuous operation.

What is the power consumption?

Active power ranges from approximately 6.5W (WD Gold 16TB) to 11.8W (Seagate Exos 10TB). Idle power ranges from 3.3W to 8.3W. For high-density storage arrays with many drives, per-drive power budgeting is important.

Are these drives suitable for NAS or only for servers?

These are enterprise-class data center drives rated for 24/7 operation, not prosumer NAS drives. They exceed the workload ratings of consumer or NAS-grade drives (WD Red, Seagate IronWolf) and are the correct choice for corporate storage servers, SAN/NAS with enterprise controllers, and backup appliances requiring maximum reliability.

What sector formats are supported?

WD Gold: 512e / 4Kn (varies by model). Seagate Exos: 512e and 4Kn. Toshiba MG: primarily 512e. Please confirm your storage controller's sector format compatibility before ordering, particularly for 4Kn configurations.

What is the typical use case for these SATA HDDs?

Bulk capacity storage in data centers: cold and warm storage tiers, backup and archive targets, media storage, surveillance storage, and large-capacity NAS or SAN buildouts where cost-per-TB is the primary consideration. For latency-sensitive workloads, pair with our SSD options as a caching tier.
